Kevin Monsecour

Kevin Monsecour was born in Aarschot, Belgium in 1979. His fascination for seashells awoke when he was around 14 years old, due to his brother David who started collecting some years earlier. Kevin holds a professional bachelor degree in biology and graduated with a dissertation on the classification of molluscs. After his studies he became a teacher of mathematics, biology and geography for pupils aged 12-14 years in his local town.

The love for shells never faded and around the age of 18, he started a small shell business with his brother and became also more scientifically interested in the world of Molluscs. At the age of 20 he described his first new species, many more followed since than. In total he described more than 100 new species and several others are in the pipeline of being described. Most of them in his beloved family of Dove shells (Columbellidae). Since longtime he works as a volunteer for the Natural History Museum of Paris to identify expedition material and publish about this.  In 2018 he was granted with the title Honorary Research Associate in this institution.

As he felt like doing more for Molluscs, he parttime quit his teaching job about two years ago and started the “shells@school” project. He travels through Belgium to educate pupils of different ages about the world of Molluscs. This is how he came in contact with the MSF, which is funding this project for the major part.

Apart from the school project in Belgium, he is also involved in other projects for the MSF: he helped in making cards for the American school project, works on identifying and cataloging shells in the collection of the MSF, made photo galleries for the website and is on the lookout for interesting shellcollections that might become available to add to the MSF-collection.
